EDUCATION
The University of Georgia was one of the first universities in the south with an accredited Interior Design program. Their renowned Art Department was like finding the Holy Grail for me! I graduated summa cum laude, taking every Art, Design and Architectural History course I could get, learning how the great Masters from Michelangelo to Le Corbusier shaped space.
At night I would read Nikkolaus Pevsner’s books on Architectural History for fun.
But that made me so excited I couldn’t sleep!
CONTINUING EDUCATION
As a professional ASID member I am required to take continuing education courses to maintain Professional Status. In the last several years I have taken five or six courses in LED Lighting, a course on Smart Homes, a course on the benefits of Hydro-Therapy, a course in minimizing Infectious diseases in the built environment, and several courses e in natural and man-made Stone products. I’ve attended a two-day course in furniture manufacturing and upholstery methods in Hickory NC, and a course in drapery workroom techniques. I have also taken a workshop in refrigeration taught by Sub-Zero. But my favorite course was an extensive study of Human Response to the Built Environment.
EXPERIENCE
The first years of my career were in Atlanta, a Mecca of design for the South. As I worked my way up from design assistant to managing director in several of Atlanta’s top design firms, projects included Atlanta’s largest law firm, Tampa Electric, the Atlanta Airport and Coca Cola’s USA headquarters. I am grateful to Design Continuum, Associated Space Design and Stevens & Wilkinson Architects for the phenomenal learning opportunities they afforded me. But my first love was always residential design where I get to create more personal design customized to individual clients. My Design projects are really about them – their passions, their history and their aspirations.
GIVING BACK
As an Interior Design professional I have served as an officer in the Georgia chapter of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). I taught the six-week Prep course for the NCIDQ Exam (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) in Atlanta and Missouri. And I have served as an accreditation team member for CIDA, the (Council of Interior Design Accreditation) which makes accreditation visits to Interior Design programs at the University level in the United States and in Canada.
