Good design evokes a human response. I realized this long ago from my own reactions to exceptional Art and well-designed Interiors. It made me determined to create “design experiences” of beauty, excitement, revelation or peace for my clients.
Listening to the client’s Vision, the architecture, and building site, allows me to create the “character” of the project. And each design decision is seen through that design filter.
A Discerning Eye allows me to see which elements are essential, and which can be edited. This is a learned skill, developed through Education, and years of keen observation and worldwide travel.
Everything doesn’t need to be expensive. By thinking through the design, we can determine which features will convey the perception of quality, and which can play supporting roles and cost less.
An open mind and flexibility go a long way in this business. It’s always surprising when an unexpected project “challenge” forces me back to the drawing board, only to come back with a solution which becomes a client’s favorite design feature.
Faith in the “Muse”– The ability to see a transformed space in my mind is a God-given talent, which I’ve learned to trust. Moments of creation are a supernatural experience with potential to make a project infinitely better.
